This is actually my first. Despite having been around a lot of people that are heavily involved in the tech industry, I really only had surface knowledge of it(which is still a lot better than most people, surprisingly). However, I recently got the opportunity to build my own system for the first time. So, I did a ton of research and got some help and advice from some fellow pals and finally ended up with this:
http://pcpartpicker....gm/saved/GkJRsY
The experience was amazing and I had a blast learning and looking into different things. After 7+ years of never even touching an adequate gaming rig, this was an awesome thing for me, and I can only imagine the things I'll do on this rig after its built(porn). Thus, I will be naming my new child "The Dream". I'm definitely looking forward to what the future holds for this system as I do plan on upgrading it in around 3-5 years.

I will mention that unfortunately, due to last minute budget issues, I did have to make some last-minute changes. The hard drive wasn't originally Seagate(trash), no more dedicated sound card, and I won't actually be getting the SSD(I was originally ordering two, one being to freshen up my current PC for my sister to use, but unfortunately I will only be able to get one, and it'll go to her). The motherboard was also originally an MSI Z97 Gaming 7, but not only was it just a little too expensive, I also found out that MSI boards of that series have huge problems with flashing the BIOS. I'm a little sad that I can't keep to the black/red color scheme, but the Z97-A is still a great board from what I've seen.

If you happen to notice any glaring issues, please do mention them. Everything is currently being processed, but I'm still in an easy position where I can cancel/return anything. Everything should be in around March 3, and I'll update this thread when everything is set up and I have pics.

Special thanks to Sirenfal for not only providing advice, but also providing references and resources which put me on the right track when I was initially slightly confused as to what I was doing.

I hope you all like what you see, and have a nice day!

EDIT: Ayy lmao I finally got the first set of parts in. Here, have a picture of my glorious mug.
Spoiler
The parts shown above include the Z97-A, 2TB HDD, SSD, GTX 970, GTX 750(for the current comp), HyperX headset, 4690k, Win 8.1, and Arctic Silver 5. I'm really fucking happy right now.

Tell me how the partitioned memory works out for you.  I've been more tentative to buy one now ever since the announcement from Nvidia.

I'm already aware of that issue and don't really care. The build is strictly meant for 1080p, and there really aren't too many things that you can run on 1080p that'll push through 3.5 gb of vram to my knowledge. It doesn't change the fact that the benchmark power it's shown is still very real, and that it's still a very good card.

You are dead wrong. Games have been pushing 2gb of VRAM for 2 years now. MOST are starting to require upwards of 3gb past medium or high settings.

Which is why 3.5 gb is fairly safe. The only things I could imagine pushing the card over its limits are bleeding edge games among the AAA category. Even then, all that pretty much means is I won't be running it on max. The system wasn't designed with perfectly handling each and every possible obstacle thrown at it in mind. It was mostly just meant for mainstream gaming, some graphics-intensive gameplay, and minor video and animation work.

However, since I'm well aware you've been a part of this business for much longer than I am, I'll probably get a different card setup if you can suggest one that's better. There's probably a lot that hasn't really occurred to me.

As long as you aren't turning texture quality up to max on AAA games 3.5gb is plenty. It's obviously not ideal that the advertising for the card is wrong, but it's still probably his best bet since he can't get a 980.
[7:57:52 PM] Sirenfal: How could you possibly think typing 'import skynet' was a good idea?
[8:27:58 PM] jadems2: It can't be any worse than the time we got drunk and imported com.mojang.skynet

Jade: Ah, the fantastic stability of Bukkit combined with the blazing speed of interpreting python in Java. Sounds ideal.

I'm mostly fucking with you. For the price, the 970 is damn good even with the memory shortage.

Oh, Blind, you silly goose. Making me doubt my own several-hundred-dollar decisions. :3
