As far as I've heard, the letters have always just been random. The idea this HF poster had was to have the client check the entity (the button you click on the table) and return what that entity would have done.
Never seen the code, though, do I wouldn't know.

The letters are completely random. They don't have anything to do with the enchantment at all, and there has already been mods that do this, also, you can just change a text file in your jar and get the same effect, but even in english, the actual words change, so it won't help you any to read it in english.

I'm going to write a mod that tells you what the enchantment will be before you do it.
Hopefully it's possible, it would be a great addition to a hacked client.

No, you can't make a mod like that, because it's impossible. There already is a mod that tells you what enchantment you'll get, but it only works in single player, in multiplayer after you choose what enchantment you get, it'll just take your points but you still get a random enchantment.
